The CEFR divides language learners into three broad divisions, each containing two subdivisions:
A: Basic User (A1 & A2)
Includes absolute beginners (A1) and elementary users (A2) who can hold simple conversations, ask directions, and describe basic details about their family and background.
B: Independent User (B1 & B2)
Includes intermediate speakers (B1) who can talk about hobbies and travel, and upper-intermediates (B2) who can explain complex opinions, read professional reports, and speak with spontaneous fluency.
C: Proficient User (C1 & C2)
Includes advanced speakers (C1) capable of producing well-structured academic essays, and master users (C2) who understand complex idioms, read dense literature, and communicate with native-like fluidity.
